Nice one, Graeme! I presume 238 was in the process of reversing with the poles not changed.

Now for some more self-indulgence.  With a fairly large pic.

The area where you were standing when you took that photo is now a construction site for the Lambton Bus/Rail interchange. Here is a photo of the area from the 11th floor of Rutherford House, taken about a month ago. When complete, (trolley) bus services from the south will travel the full length of Lambton Quay, enter the turning and stabling area in the left foreground of the photo, turn in the area in the centre foreground and pick up passengers at the bus platforms being constructed below the bottom of the photo. It will connect to the Railway Station concourse via the pedestrian subway which has already been rebuilt.

Also of note in the photo is one of the new 1300 series Stagecoach diesel buses entering the turning area from Thorndon Quay. You would have been standing where the tree is behind it. The concrete spiral ramp is where the background to your photo was - it leads to the walkway system above the rail platforms leading to the new stadium in the railwards in the background. A similar arrangement to the Colonial Stadium in Melbourne (but less well-designed) . There is still a light tower behind the ramp - I don't know how it relates to the one you remember. The old 1908 tramways headquarters building facade can be seen in the shadow behind the bus.

Some of the old 1949 English Electric EMU stock remains in service - e.g. the red stock for peak services to the Hutt Valley (behind the spiral ramp); the mustard yellow variant waiting at Platform 1 at the right runs on the Johnsonville line. The Regional Council has approved yet another upgrade of the EE stock, but there is a possibility that 2nd-hand Japanese EMUs could be imported instead. And, of course, light rail is being considered for some of those services.

That's enough for now!

This shot is a MUST to share.

Not only is the car 238 a preserved car at Queen Elizabeth Park,
But the picture shows the base of the railway station floodlight tower from which I took a lot of  shots.
I had to climb these furshlugginer things every Monday for a couple of years while working on the good old NZR.

On a recent trip "home", I noted the remains of this tower at Hutt workshops.

Final note...............
I make no apologies for the large size of my postings.
In my opinion they are more effective and you can really get into them !!!

I would like to hear what you all think.
