RE: Same place, same number, 41 years later

Traffic signalling in the tunnel is now just by standard traffic signals -
the tunnel is now used by diesel buses more than trolleys. The actuation is,
I think, by the usual loops in the tunnel floor and the lights seem to
operate on a 'first come first served' basis. However, when I was there
waiting to take the photo a Wellington Regional Council PT division car
drove up, waited at the red light for a second or two, saw the tunnel was
clear and drove in. The lights are a bit superfluous because the other
portal is clearly visible.

There are still a lot of old houses in Mt Victoria, and pressure to preserve
them, as in the other inner-city areas, but modern development is creeping
in - a new unit can be seen on the left of my photo.

Ripping! Both pictures.

Zeiss Contaflex SLR. I'm still using the same camera 40 years later. No
flash,
top shutter speed 1/500 second gives me lots of blurs. Not a bad lens,
though.

The vehicle number match was a sheer fluke.

Ha! More likely laziness. Brent promised me a picture of 235, so herewith he
kills two birds with one stone.

Of course, both of his pictures show vehicles travelling in opposite
directions
from mine. Is that perhaps because they were posted from the Southern
Hemisphere while mine were from the Northern?

It is fascinating to see the corner of Pirie and Austin Streets virtually
unchanged in four decades. Though I'd venture a guess that the property
values
are a whole lot different.

For the unenlightened amongst us, what sort of signalling controls traffic
in
the tunnel?
