Wellington: Pirie Street in 2002

Here is another low-res today shot of the same scene. I didn't note the
number of the trolleybus - it is not 235 this time - and the resolution is
too low to make it out. Don's pronunciation of the street is correct for
most locals, although I have also heard it as 'pirry'.

Okay, once again:
Here is the companion to the Haitaitai Tunnel picture posted a few days ago.
It
looks eastward one street below the tunnel entrance, and shows the same car
(Fiducia 235 - I mistakenly numbered it 222 in the previous post) a few
minutes
earlier on its outward journey.
For those not familiar with Wellington: route 2 via Haitaitai had once been
the
main line to Miramar and for some Seatoun trips as well, though the latter
suburb was principally served via route 3 over Constable Street. But by the
time I first saw the city the tramways to those eastern districts had been
cut
off by expansion of the airport at Rongotai, and route 2 trolleybuses used
the
Mount Victoria vehicular tunnel a short distance to our right. But there
still
remained a rump service as far as Haitaitai at the far end of the tramway
tunnel. In 1962 this gave way to trolleybuses over their present route
passing
single-file through the old tunnel.
At four decades' remove I can't remember so much as the month, or what I did
that day. Most likely I rode 235 up the hill from Courtenay Place, got off
here, shot it continuing on without me and walked up the street to the
tunnel
entrance. A 12 minute service was maintained on this little branch line; I
don't know whether another tram came down in the meantime but, in any case,
(unless I misread the numbers) the returning 235 was the car I captured
coming
out of the tunnel.
I remain puzzled as to why the route number was changed from 2 to 1 for the
journey to the city. As far as I know, the usual practice was to use the
same
number whether headed for Railway or for the 'burbs.
The name of the street held some fascination, because I lived in Pirie
Street
in Palmerston North. I don't know how Wellingtonians pronounced it, but in
PN
we said
"pye-ree."
