Thanks to everybody participating in my education. And no, I didn't seriously
think that Mr. Scholten could have been wrong about those Footscray numbers.

Okay, if you guys are so smart, how about outlining the evolution of tram route
numbers in Melbourne? Why do most of the St. Kilda Road lines have termini like
7A & 7B while the bulk of the network has them grouped by tens? Was the
numbering accomplished under different regimes in different areas, or did a
light suddenly flash as they finished with 9 and embarked upon 10?

As to the 55/56, isn't it nearly unique for a basic service to change numbers
on reversing? It suggests that at one time West Coburg trams had regularly run
through to St. Kilda Beach and that the old numbers were retained when they
were cut back to Domain Road.

If some of these questions have been asked and answered before, I can only
observe that it's daunting for a newbie to slog through 3700 previous messages.
I beg your indulgence.
