Being an ex Trammie from Malvern, Essendon & South Melb (Hanna Street) I
have worked the 55/56 a few times and we were taught that 55 to WC and 56 to
Domain Road, as in the days of showing one route number on one end and
another on the other end, could not be done with Z type trams, I used to
change the number to 56 on the up to Domain Road I/C but not many of us did.
I think in the end it just confused the passengers. such as the 87 & 88
routes which we used on the Footscrays W/M'rong's which was used for running
back to the depot.
In my day the 21/22 where not used often, many a time passengers asked what
a 21/22 was, but I think they are used a lot in this day and age.

I was always confused by the 55/56 thing and yes some used to run throughto
St Kilda Bch.heavily
Both Essendon and Sth Melbourne helped with the number eight route to
Toorak, although if there was a staff or tram shortage at either of the
above depots, then these were the first to be cancelled. Toorak in that
time used to have a 3 minute peak service and they used to still get
loaded. Much better than the present 8 minute service in the peak.to
My memory is not perfect but Malvern used to run a West Coburg tram from
Malvern terminus (City via William St, 35 and then just kept going to WC).
There was also a 'staff car' which went from Malvern depot to Glenhuntly
depot (used by shed staff) and then went to West Coburg. It was fun going
West Coburg, hearing the noises from the zoo, the frost in the park,I
wondering how fast you could travel around the curves without derailing.
Also Sth Melbourne used to to do some 'day ins' (wash etc) for Malvern and
think the crew used to travel as passengers to Sth Melbourne depot and carhttp://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
out to make an evening peak William St service to one of the Malvern
terminus.

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Re message 3766Don,re Essendon route numbers, standard procedure in the 60s and 70s
was to show 56 on the south end of the car and 55 on the north end.As
I remember there were odd workings through to St.Kilda Beach and of
course these showed 55 at both ends.Peter Bruce.PS.of course there
were some peak services supplied by South Melbourne,I think 2 trips
in each peak.I have a feeling that Malvern might even have even had
one table with a West Coburg on it,maybe you can help here Jeff?As a
South Melbourne driver I always loved going out through the
Park, especially running in after the PM peak, hills and curves and no
passengers/stops so you could really give it some stick, very
occasionally you might jag a Thompson[BTH motors] and that was real
fun.But I digress.........PB.
