Lady drivers

I started at Brunswick depot in 1974 and we had a connie name Joyce
Barry who ws known as the "Sargent Major".
If you knew her,or worked with her as your conductor, you would have
no problems in understanding why she had that name...
She was to become the FIRST woman tram driver on the MMTB.
As for being afraid of driving the trams, Joyce soon told the Clydes
at Brunswick exactly what she expected of them.
Other female drivers who went for it at Brunswick were Kathy Stone,
Thelma Rhodes, Eddy Dunn and Eyvone Thorburn.
When I transferred to Essendon under the control of union hardliner
Jimmy Banks, the woman drivers' thing was a big issue for him which
lasted for quite a while.
