Just to humanise this group a bit, who was the first
female tram driver?
I believe her name was Joan and she worked at Sth
Melbourne depot. Many said there was no way that a female tram driver could stop
the weight of a tram and how could she control such a big heavy
thing. She would have many accidents.
Personally when I started working on the trams I used to
wonder how a woman could drive such a big thing until I realised that you only
drive the front, the rest just follows behind.
