Dave Hinman was one of the new members we (the Tramway Historical Society)
gained as a result of the horse tram week in September 1964. At that stage
he was a high school teacher but switched to town planning, did his diploma
at Auckland University (and WST!) and has ever since been a planner in
Christchurch. He is now a senior manager in the Christchurch City Council. I
have lunch and a natter with him every time I visit my home town. Dave has
been President or other office holder in the THS virtually since he joined,
and is currently in charge of the trolleybus section at Ferrymead. His
personal link between Ferrymead and the Christchurch City Council was the
prime facilitator in the construction of the Christchurch Tramway - it would
not have happened (or even been suggested) if Dave had not been there. And
he even does the occasional stint as motorman for restaurant or other
special charters!

Graeme has also made a name for himself at Puffing Billy and Brian
has done well in hospital administration. What happened to Andrew? I
note that everyone is looking towards the camera except Bob!
Paul in Melbourne.

A nostalgia shot for those of us old enough to

It's a mere 33 years ago (31/8/1969 to be precise) and
Andrew Howlett, Graeme Breydon, Brian Weedon (in
front) and (the late) Bob Prentice are rather proud of
the 'new' trolley retriever freshly fitted to the
front of 217 - courtesy (I believe) of the good
offices of Dave Hinman (centre) who made the right
connections with NZ trolleybus authorities.

Dave went on to make quite a name for himself in
Christchurch tramway circles.
