Two more pickkies .
First showing west side with a fair bit of interesting brickwork.
The east shows the roofing arrangements, note different ventilators. Rear section is modern coloured bricks, probably added by Julian..

Jeff Bounds reports commutator noises being emmitted in 1962.
So probably rotary(ies) installed at some time probably 1925-6 when Brighton Rd cable came OOS.
City - Elsternwick electric opened 29/8/26. Jeff says steel pole line pulled down in late 60s poss.' 67.

Location is of interest also (south of Glenhuntly Rd.), as it signifies P&MTT expansionist program to extend to Gardenvale along Brighton Rd. Problem was they ran foul of "The Railway Committee" which not only had heavy rail along the route, but heavier politics on their side as well.

Further information and memories have floated back of conversations held at the time of my internal visit.
The owner, Julian, said that it had been a HV cable store in its last stage of Board ownership.
He replaced the Atrium windows were originally louvre type in which the opening was controllable.

The batteries would have been of the open type, which consisted of a large, deep glass rectangular jar with lead plates suspended from the top of the sides. The cells would have most probably maintained and manufactured on the site in the rooms along the western side of the building. These cells used wooden separators between the plates and had rectangular glass splash plates over the top of the lead plates to contain the splashes of sulphuric acid as the hydrogen bubbles broke the surface.  If there were 2 battery banks,it would allow 1 to remain on line during maintenance ( Cell replacement etc.)

So ends the saga of Rusden St Sub - maybe!
Bye for now
Kevin
