Hello All
I hope those WST/MOTAT members and supporters who couldn't be with us on
Sunday enjoyed a beautiful Spring weekend.
Some wonderful news. Sunday morning and the early afternoon were spent
fitting the re-timbered body catchers, trips with appropriate swearing and
cursing at the design and adjustment limitations. The workshop crew members
present climbed aboard and Bruce Gamble under the watchful eye of a smiling
Ian Stewart powered 321 beyond the Museum gate and the Zoo. She made three
return trips to check the emergency braking and safety systems under power,
also checking clearances of trees and signage, which will require trimming
and modification prior to 321's return to regular service. A quiet hum of
power of the overhauled helical geared Melb 1A trucks has replaced the growl
(and clunks) of the former worn spur geared trucks.
(CITY 8 on the destinations reminiscent of a photograph Ron Sholtern took of
321 in Melbourne, operating from Malvern Depot, which he has kindly sent us
a digital copy)
Unfortunately there was no digital camera present, but three 35mm shutter
bugs recorded the event and I'm sure it won't be too many days before these
are digitised.
Over the coming weeks some further tweaking of various systems will be
undertaken to ensure trouble free running, some touch ups (yes we got our
first scratches from visitor's rings, "Oh what lovely paint work" - rub -
rub! Plus a good wax and polish to protect our four/five (lost track)
investment in time and effort.
Also another point of interest is that Auckland No.11 is receiving a tidy up
and repaint which commenced last Tuesday and is due for completion prior to
our November Centenary celebrations. Windows have been removed for paint
stripping and mitre repairs, roof leaks attended to and panel work
preparation will commence shortly. This is as well as the great work being
carried out presently on 47, including repairs to the MOTAT/sink end
platform framework and re-flooring now well underway. As an aside, 44 will
also return to the Coach Shop once the ASB/Workshop extension is complete
and room can be made in the Lower Barn.
Plenty to be getting on with.
Kind Regards
David Cawood
