Observed Wed. 28/8 about l0 am from a westbound route
513 bus in Bell St. Coburg a truck eastbound with all
white combino - no fleet no. visible between Melville
Rd. and rail crossing at Coburg presumably en route
from ship to Preston Workshops.
Large dot matrix destinations all showing MEXIKOPLATZ.
Also re Batman Avenue terminus.
Back in the early '60's when 3 routes regularly
terminated there it was a busy place in the pm peak.
It was the ONLY place where city workers could catch
their tram home, compared to all other termini which
could start at the terminal and pick up through the
city. Routes 70, 74 and 77 plus short workings picked
up their load there and no where else unless you
worked along Batman Avenue at the electric car shops
or wherever.
Four trams in the teerminus and 3 or 4 waiting outside
was common from about 4.30pm to 6 pm each week day. A
starter in teh east end cabin controlled it all and
when a car was due to depart you heard over the load
speaker .......( Prahran, Wattle Park Elgar Rd or
Warrigal Rd. or Burwood as the case may be) car
departing..... a load buzzer would sound, tram gong
rung and out it would go with a standing load. This
was repeated every few minutes until the peak was
finished when the man would go and all would be
peaceful again. I remember he had a radio announcers
sonorous voice. All very formal.
After Hawthorn closed and Burwood route 74 was
diverted the tempo kept up for a time but over a
period of years it became rather shabby and the
starter's office was rarely used. Now it is all gone
and the tiled roof is last time I saw it sitting in
the grass at Bylands. I hope they can rebuild it
someday.
Memories are made of this!!!!!

Subject: Light Rail for Darwin!?!

$25M RAIL LINK PLAN

The Northern Territory Government is considering
building a $A25
million light rail link between Darwin and
Palmerston. The rail would
connect the Palmerston passenger terminus for the
Alice Springs to
Darwin railway to central Darwin and the cruise
liner wharf. Transport
Minister Kon Vatskalis said little land acquisition
would be involved,
because planners had foreseen the need for a 25km
light rail when
building Tiger Brennan Drive between the two cities.
A proposal will
go before Cabinet before the end of 2002.

Are any events planned for this weekend to
commemorate the 40th
anniversary of the closure of Glasgow's
tramways?

Closure

The events at Crich will actually take place on the
weekend of 7/8 September.

On Saturday 7th there will be a special event at
3.00pm where Alan Fitzpayne, son of E.R.L Fitzpayne,
who was General Manager in Glasgow at the tramway
closure, will drive Coronation 1282 from the
entrance to Wakebridge, where there will be some
short speeches, followed by refreshments and a
video/cine show of Glasgow items.
Glasgow trams will be out in service at Crich that
day, and in the evening there will be a dinner in
the Red Lion followed by a Glasgow quiz.

On 6th September 1962, the Burgh of Clydebank, east
of Glasgow, had a special run for the Town Council
from one end of the Glasgow tram route 9 that lay in
their Burgh to the other. Coronation 1282 was used,
and when it eventually set off back to Dalmarnock
Depot, the then 9 year old Alan Fitzpayne was given
a shot of the controls, with his Father's
permission, and under the watchful eye of the Chief
Inspector. It is this unusual event that we hope to
re-enact on 7th September

You may like to know that SCOTTISH TRAMWAY AND
TRANSPORT SOCIETY has produced a commemorative 48p
book 'GLASGOW TRAMS, 40 YEARS ON' by Ian Stewart,
author of 'The Glasgow Tramcar', with various
articles and photos regarding the trams then and
since. It has 16 pages in full colour, plus
laminated full colour covers, and is available price
£9.95p, plus postage, (Cheques in Sterling only,
please) from myself. I will be happy to supply
further details to anyone interested.
