Hi Andrew,
Batman Avenue has had an interesting history.
Up to three routes terminated at Batman Ave - 70, 75 Burwood and 77 Prahran
via Chapel Street.
Burwood cars terminated there until the reorganisation of the runs
originating from Hawthorn and Camberwell Depots in the mid-60s/50s? Route 27
(corrections pls?) commenced from Hawthorn, Power Street shunt and ran via
Power, Burwood, Bridge Roads, Wellington Pde, Flinders Street, Spencer to
Lonsdale Street. Burwood cars travelled via Swan Street.
Route 77 ran until the mid-80s and was a very lightly patronised run but
provided a handy alternative to get to Chapel Street direct from town. It
travelled via Swan Street then turned into Chapel Street and went all the
way to Prahran, Brighton Road. From memory the North Richmond cars went to
St Kilda Beach.
At night I think it travelled to St Kilda Bch but I could be wrong. Sundays
saw a bus - route 377 I think.
Anyway I remember as a student back then waiting for a orange Z3 on the 70
at Batman Ave to go home whilst on the other track a Sw6 or suchlike with
her compressor chugging away happily awaiting departure time.
Ahh memories.
I'm on leave for the next three days - with the weather so good at present
the cameras and an early start is called for to catch up on my tram
photography. Expect to see a hatted gentlemen around the city streets and
outside certain depots for the morning/afternoon run outs on the next couple
of days.
