While doing the yo-yo I have read, played music (not driving at the time)
had a persons dog keeping me company, smoked a lot of cigarettes, pretend I
am a trapeze artist by walking the rails as long as possible at Orong Rd,
throw ballast at trees and slept. With 15 minutes lay up time and at
certain times nearly half an hour there is not much to do to keep the mind
from turning into jelly as you go up and down for 4 hours.

While Brunswick had the tango, Preston the hump, Malvern had and has the yo
yo. A short trip connecting evening and Sunday service that connects with
the East Brighton at Orrong and Dandenong Rds. Although it was a perfect
opportunity, I am sure no one ever drank from a hip flask, smoked a joint or
cheated on their partner with a conductor/conductress while they were bored
out of their brains going back and forth.
Being an innocent young conductor, I learnt how to play scribbage from a
very old driver. It was very exciting sticking pegs into a board. Pity I
have forgotten how it was done.
Vague recollection of one conductor I worked with, who was a son of an
inspector, stabbing and piercing his pen into the seat upholstery while
saying "I am bored out of my ******* brain".
Andrew ( hope this is not too boring writing......is anyone really
interested?).

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Tangos<http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/>http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
Now there was an interesting job.
At Brunswick, we ran the Tango from Brunswick depot across to Holmes
Ave.
This was to connected the East Coburg car to Sydney Road via Moreland
Road after the through car stopped running in the evenings.
Crew changes were also achieved using this car.
I remember doing the late night second half on this run as being the
most soul destroying job I ever encountered.
Remember back then (1974)the car had to shunt at the depot at Cameron
Street......Then shunt again in Holmes Road five minutes later to
connect with the Lygon St car.
Then it was back to Sydney Road again, and again!!!
The stories one could tell about the Brunswick tango would fill a
book !!
However, in the cold light of day, and after much consideration, I
feel that 90% of them must remain memories of those who were there.
Not that anything "Shifty" went on ... mind you!!!
I reckon though, our brothers at Preston doing the "Hump" tango,
would have had an even worse time connecting St George's road with
Plenty Road, At least at Brunswick we could get the tram into
parallel.
