--- When I drove trams at Brunswick in 1974, it was not uncommon on
Fridays to have a block car at North Coburg and another in the City
for route 19.
Usually a crew would be DOC'd ( Day off cancelled ) and run the block
car all day.
Sometimes the block car, with a special BLOCK CAR auxillary board
would get almost to Sarah Sands Hotel at Brunswick Road before
changing over to the car going back.
The drivers had a copy of the departure times of cars, and which ones
not to block, ie a run in car.
Some drivers would work Sydney Road all day and NEVER get to Bakers
Road at all.

Dear all,

Last night I was having a chat with a fellow enthusiast Keith Kings
about St
Kilda / Chapel Street services and the subject of block cars was
raised.

A block car is a tram that waits at the terminus and is supposed to
depart
on time if the normal service car is late/delayed. Keith mentioned
that due
to traffic congestion along Chapel Street block cars were a regular
sight at
North Richmond in the 80s.

Are block cars still used around the system? If so where?
