Memories... goodbye route No 44?!?

on Saturday afternoon my father drove me up to the Mont Albert
terminus to observe some of the track laying - this was the weekend
when the Union road terminus was to be dug up and replaced by new
track that would link up to the extension already laid down the slope
towards Box Hill.

As we drove down we saw a small piece of track being replaced on
Whitehorse Road opposite OLGC Church - through the lights and down
the hill from the Deepdene shunt.

At Mont Albert the works were in full swing and old shunt had been
dug up and a new one was being put in a block or two closer to the
city.

That night we drove up to Balwyn again on the way out to dinner. It
was then I noticed there was some more track work going on outside
the Balywn McDonalds. As we were late and it was getting dark I did
not have time to stop, look or ask what was happening.

The next morning Dad went up to Balwyn to buy some hot bread, and
when he returned he told me the Balwyn shunt had been removed!

So is this the end of No.44 and the Balwyn short shunt? It's been a
long time since I have seen a No. 45 Deepdene as a destination,
however with Balwyn Gone, will we start to see a few more? Or will
every tram have to run through to Mont Albert for the time being?

Cheers

Davo
