Gold Coast light rail study begins
A $1.3 million study examining the feasibility of a light rail
network on the Gold Coast is underway.
The study, which is expected to take 18 months to complete, is being
jointly funded by the state and federal governments.
Queensland's Transport Minister Steve Bredhauer says there will be no
further funding commitments until the feasibility study is completed.
"At that point in time we would look at contributions that state and
federal Governments might be able to make, but also most importantly
we'd look to see whether we could secure any financing from the
private sector that might be able to help deliver an important piece
of infrastructure here for the people of the Gold Coast," he said.
Gold Coast mayor Gary Baildon is delighted the feasibility study is
finally underway.
He says the light rail network is vital for the city's future
transport needs.
"We're getting to a desperate stage. Traffic is building every day,"
he said.
"We've got to get a public transport system to get the cars off the
roads and encourage people to use that public transport for all the
good reasons - for environmental reasons and for traffic reasons."
