Hi, gang!
I am posting a series of former Melbourne W2 trams now running in Memphis,
TN. Melbourne's cars are 234, 1978 (ex-353), 417, 539, 540, 545, and 553.
Three more, ex-New Orleans, are on the property awaiting restoration. These
are 452 (ex-626), 454 (ex-478) and 455 (ex-331). Allegedly there is a
fourth W2, from Green Bay, WI also awaiting preparation for service, but I
have no further details of its number or history stateside.
First up is a picture of 1978, which has been in Memphis since the Main
Street Trolley began operation in 1993. It was Gomaco's demonstrator W2
car, and its number originally was 353. Memphis numbers its cars according
to what it was when acquisition took place. All Memphis cars have a single
center entrance with folding doors, and the cars are one-man-operated, with
the motorman leaving his post at stops for fare collection. This increases
dwell time, but the Main Street Trolley's operation is quite leisurely,
allowing for such an arrangement.
1978 is southbound on Main Street passing through Civic Center on 26
September 1994.
