RE: Wellington plans

I was involved promoting the tramway idea in the early 1990s, and revived
the idea when I stood (unsuccessfully) for the Wellington City Council last
year. Although the City Circular bus service was touted as a pilot for the
tramway, any mention of a tramway has been dropped from the plans for
continued development of the waterfront. Ironically, the General Manager of
the City Council-owned company developing the waterfront is the President of
the Wellington Tramway Museum. He admitted to me during my campaign that the
tramway was simply overlooked during recent planning, but has done nothing
to see it reintroduced.
The WTM has always been completely passive about the Lambton Harbour Tramway
proposal since its inception in the early 1980s - probably because they
thought it would compete with their museum line. In contrast, the
involvement of the Tramway Historical Society in the Christchurch Tramway
was its main critical success factor.
Cheers,
Brent Efford

Before the ex-London Double decker busses were put on the City
Circular, there were plans to put in a tourist tramway similar to
Christchurch's setup.
What were they and how far did they go???
