Only after the formation of the CTA in 1947, by which time the street
railway system was well past its peak. But my point was that the
genesis of this E-Mail thread came from comparing London and Glasgow
in their decline as sizeable tram systems to Sydney and Melbourne IE
within the former Empire and I suggest again that Montreal, Toronto
and Vancouver at some point had claims to be among the largest if not
the very largest-and they were unified systems.

For example, Toronto in the early 1950s, was it not bigger than
Sydney? And were either of them bigger than Glasgow at that time?

Montreal ditto? Vancouver probably not at any time, not even if you
count the interurban divisions to Chilliwack, new Westminster etc.

And when did the baton pass to Australia? Surely it went directly to
Melbourne, for Sydney was well into its decline by 1955/6.

As for the largest in the world, people have argued London, St.
Petersburg, sometimes a claim is put in for Vienna. How about New York
City before the Metropolitan was broken up in 1911 into TARS and the
New York Railways? Or maybe Pittsburgh Railways in the 1920s. Or
Boston or Philly?-or Rio? Anyone out there know?

And today. How does Melbourne stack up against St. Petersburg or
Vienna now it's no longer a unified system? Enquiring minds want to
know...
