It was interesting to read in the latest Trolley Wire that
Haddon's "railway tram" VR #41 is to be restored, at Bendigo, in
its
original condition.
Also interesting to read that the overhaul of the cars in the
1930s,
at Newport Workshops, was so good that any traces of the earlier
paint scheme were eliminated.
Personally, I would love to see the car retained in the 1930s Green
and Cream scheme. That's how I remember them in service in the
1950s.
But the original condition will help us appreciate an era we never
experienced.
The recent moves by the State Government to "clean up" the St Kilda
area and take a more relaxed attitude towards street prostitution
in
certain areas made me wonder if St Kilda was always
Melbourne's "red
light" area.
Was Grey Street a "red light" district in the era of the railway
trams? paul,i too would prefer to see it remain in green &
cream.jeff
