I don't quite understand why NJT is having these problems with the Kinki Sharyo cars. The ones running on the Hudson Bergen line are performing very satisfactorily. Ridership, although off to a poor start is now exceeding expectations.
The problem of reduced frequency has occurred everywhere that larger capacity equipment has been introduced. The reason for introducing large capacity equipment is to reduce operating cost, a large part of which is personnel cost. Poorer service is an unfortunate concomitant.

Hi, gang!Since we've been on an "Ugly" topic for a while, I'm taking it one step
further. How about "Beauty And The Beast"?Case in point: The first picture (previously posted) is of Newark, NJ PCC 7
("The Beauty") at Heller Parkway, taken by me on August 20, 2001, five days
before Newark's PCCs were retired. The second picture--attached to this message--is of the replacements for the
PCCs: a brand-new Kinki-Sharyo low-floor LRV 101 ("The Beast") at Broad
Street, shot August 27, 2001, the first day of operation with the new cars. These are beasts in more ways than one: Whereas the public was getting
reliable 6-minute service headways and 12-minutes running time from end to
end, on the first day of the new LRVs, waits of up to 30 minutes were
frequent, and running time increased to 20 minutes or more. Cause: door
problems, cab signal problems, etc. The public was not pleased.Milantram
