Road traffic noise and rough riding of motor vehicles can be really noticeable when the crossing(s) are not properly installed.  A particularly noticeable example of this is the Anzac Parade/Cleveland intersection in Sydney where the new light rail (oops) tram line crosses the roadway at right angles.

On the other hand if it is done properly noise of  heavy traffic and high motor vehicle speeds across the rails can be minimised to almost zero.

See videos below.  This crossing is now 31 years old!

I have noticed the classic 'roaring rail' sound as trams cross the Grattan St intersection in Flemington Rd. Melbourne.

The first pic looks south east and  show the clearly corrugated rail - not seen much in Melbourne in recent years.

However, I noticed that there is also a noise when heavier motor vehicles cross that section of tramway on the cross road.

I suspect that the rail is severely damaged - perhaps a broken web.

The second pic looks across the intersection towards north west and shows signs of patching of pavement and  more corrugation on the east side rail of the outbound track.
