Your picture is of the Woods-Gilbert rail grinder owned by the MTT in Adelaide, taken outside the north wall of the Hackney tram bays on the track leading to the Truck shop. See alternative views attached.

The AETM Archives contains an MTT drawing 2208/20 Gen. Arrangement, Atlas railgrinder no 2, S Melb Blueprint                1020 x 690mm  and many of its components and also drawing 9203 (NSWGT 62-66D) Gen Arrangement, Essanee Railgrinder          Coloured              740 x 660mm

In the early part of the 20th century tramway operators around the world were concerned about rail wear and shared their experience and advice.

The attached page is from a collection of notes and drawings held in Melbourne and shows the amount of wear on some track In St Andrew St., Edinburgh - along with a note that the section had been replaced.

Some Melbourne engineers had a business at the time sending their 'Rail Planing Machine' across Australia and to the UK to re-profile the tram rails and get a few more years out of the asset.

Mal Rowe in a city that still 'sweats the asset'.
