I never really considered any of the MSRY cars as "quiet." All had spur gears
and in later years, due to lack of good maintenance, many were really "clanky"
when coasting. At the time I was deeply into motor sounds, speeds and gear
ratios, etc. You could blindfold me and I could immediately tell the
difference between a GE90, a 216, a 203, a 247 and a 1000. The 216s, as used
on the Jewetts and the American car 200s were the quietest. The 247s had a
distinct sound somewhat like the W2s MV101s. The noisiest were the GE90s on
the
1600s with the 15:71 gear ratio. The Muni cars with WH motors were far
quieter.

Milantram,
I never had the chance to ride the 798, but as I recall in the late forties,

The quietest (and fastest) streetcar I have ever ridden is the 271 (on
several fantrips), followed closely by the SN 1005. That's why the 271
