I'd still love to try to get Muni, or MSR, or both, to work out a swap with
the Seattle transit agency to get the two sets of trucks with spur gears for
our Market Street Railway "White Front" car 798, now undergoing restoration
at Mint Yard. As it stands now, 798, when it's mounted on its ex-Melbourne
MCB trucks with herringbone gears, will be a very quiet car--not typical of
most Market Street Railway Co. equipment, I'm sure.
Barring that, are there any W2 trucks left in Melbourne with spur gears?
Maybe Muni could try to swap or buy a pair...

Today is the 20th anniversary (with free rides) of Seattle's Waterfront
Streetcar, route 99. Service on the 1.7 mile route is provided by five
Melbourne W2s, 272, 482, 512, 518 and 605 operating on a 20 minute headway,
6am to midnight during the summer, on a 30-minute headway 6am to 7pm during
the winter.
...
All cars have now been fully restored and rebuilt from the floor on up. One
car has a set of spur gears. I can't name the car because they move from
car to car during overhauls.
...
The cars are similar to Muni 496 and many others throughout the country but
the left side has been closed in and Metro added trolley retrievers and
whistles. All waterfront operation is on PROW but there is street running
on S. Main St. and Fifth Ave., including the steep hill where 272 lost air
a year ago. Car 525 is an unrestored spare parts car. Metro has a complete
shop and inspection track with pit in the carbarn and two full time personnel.
