Ferny Grove

Gentlemen,
Reading John Engelman's message (no. 2654 og 11 May) brought to mind
a similar experience that occurred to me when I visited Ferny Grove
last September/October. Then, I was subjected to plain rudeness by
the person behind the book shop counter and I vowed at the time not
to go back there again. I did the usual self-appraisal in such
situations and wondered if the fault lay with me. Anyway, at the
recent AMRA exhibition (Brisbane's big annual model railway show) I
approached two members of the Tramway Museum who were manning the
Museum stand and discussed this. They were shocked. I subsequently
had a phone discussion with the President who also expressed great
concern and pressed me to try and remember the actual date of my
previous visit. This I will do, as it seems to me that both John & I
encountered the same person.
Yesterday, Sunday, I went along to Ferny Grove to meet the President.
The welcome not only from him but from the other members on duty
could not have been warmer. The upshot of this is that I have now
applied to join and subject to formal acceptance coming through, look
forward to participating and helping in an oasis of what otherwise is
a tram-less environment in Brisbane.
The really good news is that things are moving ahead at the Museum.
The track for the new depot/workshop has been laid and the track for
a triangular junction outside the new depot site is being put down.
This of course will be a boon for maintenance as it will enable cars
to be turned round to even out wear on the wheel flanges. Survey
markings are already down on the road outside the Museum for where
the extension is to cross Tramway Street and head off to Ferny Grove
station. I was told that although the Brisbane City Council had
approved the extension in principal, formal approval is still
awaited. However, I understand that culvert works being undertaken
at a creek en-route will accomodate bridging the width of a single
line tramway.
Regards
David Revis
