Day passes-Melbourne/Sydney

If this question has been answered before, I must have missed it, but amid
the turmoil now going on with the privatization of the Melbourne tram
system, is it possible to buy, on the car, a day pass as one once could
about five or more years ago?

And can one do the same on the Sydney LR line?
