RE: Flinders Street flyover

An out of towner's question ... why is the flyover to be removed? I presume
King St is to remain just as busy. Surely separating the cross tram traffic
is a distinct advantage, particularly since the Docklands line could add
even more trams to Flinders St. Will the flyover be replaced by yet another
set of traffic signals to hold the trams up?

Oh - and while I am on line - no postings for a long time re Box Hill. Has
more track been laid? Construction details of the grassed section would be
welcome.

Cheers

Hi Herman,

Glad to oblige. Here are some shots from this morning
23/5/02 (or should that be 05/23/02!)

Pardon the generally dark scene - but that's the point
of removing the flyover.

The King St shot is looking South down King St (one of
Melbourne's few non-tram central streets). The
Flinders St shot is looking East.

The railway viaduct will remain and is a few hundred
metres South of the flyover.

Genesis of the flyover was an attempt to give King St
traffic a better run in connecting to the King St
Bridge, which was built late 50's - early 60's to
provide an extra river crossing for through traffic.

That bridge connected to what is now Kingsway, but WAS
Hannah St - site of the recently departed South
Melbourne tram depot - aka Hannah St depot.

I could (and often do) go on ...

Could someone post a picture of the area with the

recall it.
