Yes Michael I was born and bred in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Lived there all my life except for my time in Sydney from 1972 to
1974. Grew up in the Great Grey Eastern Suburbs dry area - a monument
to the temperance movement of the 1920s. Good people protected from
the evils of the demon drink!
Paul in Melbourne
PS: One for our US readers; do any trams in the US travel through
any "dry" areas like ours [routes 48, 42/109, 70, 72 and 75] do in
the former municipalities of Camberwell and Box Hill (now parts of
Boroondara and Whitehorse)? I think the down track of route 72 is in
a "wet" area (former cities of Hawthorn and Kew) and the up track is
in a "dry" area (former City of Camberwell).
Hi Paul,
I was responding a little tongue in cheek to your (assumed tongue in cheek)
'visiting the Greatest Country in the World' comment. As someone else has
said, we have it quite good down here compared to the US.
As for the temperance zone, I am strongly aware of it as I work in
Canterbury. So, it gets a bit difficult to find a nearby counter lunch...
