I don't think Melbourne needs to be compared to anywhere
really, as has been said, the real competitor in Melbourne
to PT is cars.

I must admit when I went on Saturday, we drove to Ivanhoe
and caught the train as a compromise,

If you lived in South-Central Los Angeles, unless you lived within a
short walk of the Blue or Green lines, your compromise is the only
option you'd have. Well, the only option unless you *wanted* to rely
on the MTA bus service. These are about as slow as Melbourne Trams,
and while they do run into the night, they aren't perceived as safe,
and their frequencies could use a bit of work. At least they do make
an effort to feed off the rail line.

Apologies for my ramblings, but it is a bit of a hobby
horse of mine...

Same in my case...

But you brought up an interesting point, because I will be riding the
LA Light Rail from LAX to LAUPT next Wednesday, and the reverse a
week and a half later.

It's not the part of my trip to Atlanta that I'm most looking forward
to (Amtrak takes that by a country mile), though the conversation I
had with a local homeboy on my last trip on the Green line both
allays and reinforces my fears re using that system.
