The following was reported in Saturday's Herald-Sun. An interesting
consequence of this project is that the Watersider's will then become
a watering hole with tramway views.

ONE of Melbourne's worst eyesores will be torn down as part of a plan
to transform the Yarra's north bank.

The removal of the Flinders St overpass across King St will be a key
part of a major facelift for the precinct.
Premier Steve Bracks said that the cost of removing the 40-year-old
flyover -- up to $15 million -- will be met by the private sector.

He said the Government would invite developers to submit tenders for
a facelift that will connect the CBD with the Yarra. "This will rid
the western end of the city of an eyesore," he said.

"Our aim is to create a completely rejuvenated north bank, attractive
to businesses and the wider community."

Removal of the flyover will kickstart what has been dubbed as
the "Northbank" project, which aims to transform the area bound by
Flinders, King and Spencer streets Southbank-style.

But demolition of the ugly viaducts that connect the Flinders St and
Spencer St railway stations is not on the agenda, Mr Bracks said.

Removal of the overpass, expected to take four months, will begin
later next year once the developer is chosen.

Mr Bracks said studies had shown that the removal, once completed,
would have a minimal impact on traffic flow.

The revival of the north bank is part of the Government's $4 billion
Yarra Plan.
