Actually the M&MTB Rule Book called for the thing to be stuck into the slot with a firm handgrip, then use your leg against your grip hand to push it across so that you retained your balance. I used my foot often but then I always wore Vibram soled boots and knew they wouldn't slip.

differences, we would call the item a point bar.

The one pictured is of the current type ... a bit longer than the
old version and having a loop on the top to assist in its operation
by hand.

The older (shorter) versions were usually operated by pushing on
them with one's foot.

The older ones were also useful as a handy weapon with which to
impress troublesome drunks on the last tram.

One thing they all have in common is that they are always at the
wrong end of the car when the automatic points fail!  (Murphy's law)
