I started to put swag, Bill, but gave that a
miss.
The Imperial German Army pack referred to as
Matilda was a squarish thing that sat just below the shoulder blades. The bed
roll was strapped up one side, around the top and down the other side of the
pack.

It's Australian slang for what is primarily a "bedroll". It is not a
pack or rucksack.
