Paul,
It's been my experience that the Victoria Police are so incompetent at directing traffic that
they are quite sufficient to create their own traffic jams. Look for a traffic
jam and you'll find a cop or a bunch of them. The only time I ever saw a
Victoria cop doing it with style was at the corner of Flinders and Queen Street
when I was at my bus terminus. He was elegant. You could tell what he wanted you
to do a block away. I walked over to him and said, "You must be a wog. You're
showing too much style, here". He started laughing and said, "Italian,
actually". He was good.
Did the cop involved with the motorcyclists have to
be parked across the tracks?
Did he or the motorcyclists impede the progress of
public transport?
I would have written down the number of his car and
protested about him blocking public transport, myself.
If that cop had been on a bike himself, he probably
could have been a lot less disruptive to trams when he parked to direct
traffic.

tram services in the city area because of a protest "invasion" by
motor cycle riders.
At one stage I saw a police car parked across the tram tracks at the
Spring and Collins Streets intersection while an officer "directed
the traffic" [of motorcyclists]. The protesters effectively halted
tram services for a time.
Does any other city in the world allow itself to be disrupted in this
way? Decent law abiding people [such as those that contribute to this
list] are prevented from going about their business by these
disruptions. I gather marches and protests are quite common at the
weekend; not that I go into town much on Saturdays and Sundays.
And who pays the fines for the tram operators not being able to
provide their advertised services in these cases?
Paul in Melbourne.
