Re: Fare Evasion

On another list there was a report of the crack down on fare evaders in San
Diego recently. One guy was quoted as being most upset with the system
since he got two tickets in one week and now had collected a total of
six. My heart goes out to the poor guy. What an idiot.

I'm not sure if the Melbourne tramway companies have
made any headway with fare evasion, can anyone
enlighten me?From casual observation they should
have, there seem to be large numbers of uniformed
staff on the system at most times.

Its mostly M>Tram that have been "blitzing" popular
stop such as Vic Market, Melbourne Uni, etc at random
times. They seem to catch a few people, but no where
near the 30% they claim (or was it the PTUA?) are fare
evading. This would have to be because the number of
fare evaders increases significantly at night, when
there are hardly ever any ticket inspectors.

It does seem to me
that at least some of these people, adequately
trained, could be used to sell tickets along the
lines of the zone conductors we used to have.At the
moment they seem to cluster in intimidating groups
and do bugger all except when they actually grabbing
evaders which,I agree, is fair enough.Maybe too much
stick and not enough carrot though. There is also the
issue of impersonality,no human contact is necessary
these days and zone connies would be a kind of
shopfront for the companies. They would need to be
well trained and have a large knowledge of the whole
system.I would envisage them mostly working the city
zones but maybe even some suburban busy
spots, perhaps in pairs for a bit of added security.I
think this would be well worth a try and involve
neglible extra expense,at least some of these people
are paid for by the State Government as I
understand. From the employees point of view their
jobs might be a bit more secure in the future.I said
might.Any thoughts TDUs.Peter Bruce.

They have those and they are called "tram attendants",
and they "roam" the system chatting mainly with
passengers, etc. They also sell daily tickets at a 10%
premium, but since they were introduced, I have only
had my ticket checked twice by them in the last 2
years and I don't think once in the last year! I see
them quite often on board (I live in and travel around
the CBD area).
