Birneys and the Brill book

Nice photo! Actually the correct spelling is Birney, after Charles O.
Birney, an employee of the Stone and Webster utility-owning company. The
design was patented in 1917 and 1919 and was jointly developed with Joseph
M. Bosenbury. Perhaps the shorter surname was more 'catchy' and therefore
stuck!
These details from Debra Brill's 'History of the J. G. Brill Company',
Indiana University Press, 2001, ISBN 0-253-33949-9 - a marvellous read for
any tramfan, though rather an expensive one. I borrowed it from the
Wellington Public Library, but it is available through Amazon.
Cheers,
Brent Efford

The tramway at Toolan vale was privately owned by a couple of people who
were Trams drivers at South Melbourne back in 1980's early 90's this was a
private operation and never opened to the public, it had a 2ft gauge line,
and ran a couple of home made trams as well as a toast rack and burine car.
