Re Carnegie single track,I think I only worked that road once and
the"staff" so called was a piece of masonite the same as was issued
for individual tables, maybe 6" by 2",it had a table form pasted to it
upon which some wag had written"its safe to go around with me,I'm on
the pill".The staff was kept in a box which you opened with a track
key.If thats safeworking give me Raffertys Rules any time!.Other
single track sections were at the end of the East and North Coburg
lines right into the 60s and there were some extremely nasty head on
collisions between trams and motor cars piloted by absolutely falling
down drunks,ah the bad old days.PBruce.Ps.not to mention Wattle Park
of course.--- In TramsDownUnder@y..., "Andy B" <andyx@b...> wrote:

Subject: [TramsDownUnder] Single track question?

Hi All,
Just wondering what the last section of single track was in
Melbourne
in regular use on the system?
THis question comes about after watching Malcolm and finally
clicking
that the Rt.9 hump is single track.
Was this the last section?
Just to clear up on the technical side, I'm not including
terminii in
this question.

Not sure when the hump was done, but I think it was early 90's?

The last section of Carnegie was single line until Mid 1989 I
believe.
Until the duplication, trams worked under staff. Many drivers
ignored the
safeworking, and accidents were common.
