To
go all the way back to the 1910's will show that 'foreign' Sydney D's were
purchased in a hurry by the Victorian Railways for use on the StKilda - Brighton
line when their fleet was destroyed by fire (I can't remember the exact date,
but 1913 seems familiar).
Of
course enthusiasts had not been invented yet, so the act would not have been
appreciated much, particularly women in the fashion of the day trying to jump up
on the high steps of the combination cars!

Perhaps we might have to go back a bit further in history to find an
answer to the question.
Any more takers?
