RE: wood block paving (was Cable Trams)

Wood block paving was also used around tram tracks, and even kerb-to-kerb,
in the waterfront areas of Wellington. It was probably also red-gum, heavily
impregnated with tar (made great firewood!). All our heavy timbers - railway
sleepers, poles, wharf timbers etc - once came from Oz. Now treated pine is
more generally used. None of the wood paving now remains visible, possibly
it is not there at all, even sealed over.

What were the reasons for using wood blocks? Cheaper than stone? Easier to
dig up for track maintenance? Quieter under metal-tyred cart wheels?

Cheers,

As Joe says paving was a great issue in those times.

Here's another pic from the SLV collection - I think
it dates from changing to electric - early 1920's.
The blocks are good old Aussie red-gum and some of
them are still there 80 years or more on ... but not
many!!

Great attached photo. The tramway companies usually
paved between
the tracks, but it couldn't have helped much.
