Re: Rear on in Macarthur Street - Citadis trams

Melbourne is not the only city experiencing problems with new trams
on older infrastructure. In 1995, Boston ordered 100 new low floor
trams from the Italian firm Breda. The first of these was delivered
in 1997. Shortly after, it was found that these cars were prone to
derailing; the problem apparently relating to the unpowered centre
truck not being compatible with Boston's reserved trackage which does
not have check rails.

The site below includes the paragraph about these trams being removed
from service.

Type 8 Cars - UPDATED 8/27/01
Well it happened again in case you missed it a train of Type 8's
derailed on the "B" line taking out 400 feet of overhead wire. The
end result is that the MBTA has taken the cars out of service and is
now thinking about pulling them all together, though BREDA techs are
in Boston trying to sort the problem out.

For further information, refer to the following article.

My understanding is that the Breda cars are still unable to enter
service in Boston.

It will be interesting to see how the the Citadis and Combino cars
settle down on Melbourne, and whether some track and junction
upgrading will be required.

There was a rear on in Macarthur Street this
afternoon. A Citadis into the back of a Z on the up
track between Cathedral Place and St Andrews Place.

Take them off the tracks immediately and don't bring them back for
at
least a couple of years and then dribble them back a few at a time.

Maybe they should get rid of the new-fangled track brakes and
install
good old fashioned manually adjusted slack adjusters.
