Thank, Peter.

Reminds me of the time I red lined Birney 30 at Bendigo the day I took over day to day running of the trams there. It was the day after Prince Charles had driven it. Flanges were well below minimum on the SEC's profile gauge.

We jacked the thing up and I took the axles down to Preston Workshops after talking to them on the phone. I had them tied into a bit tandem trailer sitting on wooden "rails". Preston called the only guy who still knew how to run the wheel turning lathe in from his holidays to fix them. The lathe had a welder which allowed a continual arc weld bead to build up the wheels and then he cut them back to a new profile. They charged us $10 and gave us a bunch of goodies to take home, as well.

They were hospitable folks.

Peter Bruce referred to Preston Workshops as a "Temple of Traction".

Sure was.

It is likely I have ridden on 381 at the Museum, but that would have been something like 20 years ago and I don't remember it at all.

381 is currently in storage awaiting a wheel reprofile, and has been since I joined the Museum. When it eventually happens, and I have a ride (or, better, drive), I'll let you know.
