It's the prototype "Fiducia" class Wellington car No.232. Entered
service in Feb 1934 but sadly destroyed in a depot fire in 1951.
It was the first of the Wellington 'safety' cars fitted with one-man
equipment (doors, dead-man controller, etc) but not used as one-man
cars in practice. (Curiously the one-man equipment for this prototype
was taken from a Napier tram [No. 8 or 9, ex Auckland 61, 62]
dismantled after that system was destryed in the massive Hawkes Bay
earthquake of February 1931.
No.232 was followed by the first production run of Fiducias 233 to
256 from 1937-40, with the last 4 Nos 257-260 being finished after
the war 1950-2. Several survive: 244, 252 and 257 at MOTAT, 235, 238,
239 and 260 at Wellington Tramway Museum.
