Thank you, Roy. I remember
the St Kilda cars, and the associated displays, with great fondness from my one
visit in 1997.
Your comment about the joys
of finding old stuff under layers of paint - way back when we were preparing the
Christchurch California horsecar 50 for its week at Papanui back in 1964 we
discovered many interesting things with the judicious application of paint
stripper - right back to the original livery of 1887, when it wasn't even a
California, and was numbered 51. We also discovered the number 43, used in the
1890s, which (as far as I can recall) it wore in
Papanui.

You will notice the lack of multiple head and tail lights, varnished timber doors (in lieu of the current fiberglass jobbys) and of course the good old fashioned trolley poles! The attached photo shows 360 entering the Museum area after running the last public trip for the day from St Kilda Beach on Sunday 3 March 2002. As with all of the St Kilda trams, this one is is pristine condition and all are very well presented. Full marks to the AETM for turning out a wonderful assortment of trams that are well loved.
