Whilst on my visit to the St Kilda Tramway Museum, I
had the pleasure of looking at their nicely presented display of Adelaide
Trolleybuses.
The
attached subject is Australia's first trolleybus, converted in 1932 from a
Garford Petrol double decker bus by removal of the top deck and replacement of
the engine with an under bonnet electric motor. Known as the 'Green Goddess',
she ran until about 1935 from Payneham to Paradise during non-peak times,
replacing the tram service at these times. Although the first example of a
trolleybus system, it was a trail only, the meadal for the first permanant
trolley bus system goes to Perth in 1933. You will notice, she is another
example of a trolleybus with a radiator
grill...
