Footscray trams 40 years on

Next Sunday (10 March) is the 40th anniversary of the
closure of the Footscray tram system in Melbourne.

Do many readers of this group recall riding on the
cars on the three local Footscray routes: Ballarat
Road, Russell Street and Williamstown Road?

I first saw them in the mid 1950s. The base service
was run by X1 cars (459-468) and some X2s (675-680).
There were some Ts that run out in peak periods.

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to the final run at
lunch time on Saturday 10 March 1962. It was at lunch
time because, for the last few years, buses replaced
trams on Saturday afternoons/evenings and Sundays.

This continued with route 82 until the 1990s.

T 180 and X2 676 remain part of the heritage fleet. X1
467 and X2 680 are at Bylands. X1 466 is being
restored at Bendigo.A few years ago X1 467 returned to
Melbourne and ran a special tour including a visit to
Footscray.

Hopefully one day we will again be able to ride
heritage and museum cars on special tours in
Melbourne.

Paul in Melbourne
