My memories of trolleybuses started in the early 50s when, as a toddler, I was taken on family outings to North Beach in Christchurch on the ancient (1931 vintage) English Electrics. One has been restored by the Tramway Historical Society in Chch, which I belong to, and was the star of the Wellington Trolleybus Festival in 1999.

I will post some trolley photos soon, but this weekend is a rather busy one for me. Premier transit event here is the 100th birthday (yesterday) of the Kelburn Cable Tramway (to use its old name). I will post a photo taken yesterday as soon as ...

Cheers,

I  like trolley buses too, Roy.

I drove them in San Francisco in the late 60s. Marmon-Herringtons and St Louis, both with GE systems. Those buses averaged 124,000 miles between brake relines, even with the hills, because of the strong dynamic brakes.

And we had a "booster" button for hill starts to prevent rollbacks. Good old machinery.

The main reason the Muni Railway had them was because the city of San Francisco generated its own hydroelectric power in the mountains behind Yosemite National Park, and because trolley buses were ideal vehicles for steep hills, up and down.

With all our talk about trams, it is easy to forget the hunble trolley bus, or trackless trolley. Australia had a number of systems in Adelaide 193?-1963?, Brisbane 1951-1969, Hobart 1935-1968, Launceston 1952-196?, Perth 1933-1969 and Sydney 1935-1959.

New Zealand had a few too, and Wellington of course still has 'em.

Any photos or anecdotes gratefully received.
