-Paul,remember Austeam back in 1988,Richard Gilbert suggested Austram, great idea, might be a bit hard to get happening under present circumstances but the thought of even a single O car in St.Kilda Rd. is tantalising. On a different tack, aren't these C class gongs pathetic, almost apologetic, tramway gongs should at least have the capacity to be imperious, that great sound when you really drop your bootheel on the gong punch,I remember once in Collins Street near Market St.a bloke walking across and away from me stopped in the four foot,I slid up behind him and stopped,he just stood there oblivious so I dropped the heel on it,it was like a Warner Bros. cartoon,he jumped in the air and I swear he was running before his feet touched the ground, much mirth among the bystanders,it was unkind perhaps but irresistable.Anyway Austram anyone?Peter Bruce.-- In TramsDownUnder@y..., Paul Nicholson <pn1@r...> wrote:
The inclusion of the Berlin car is interesting. I
hadn't seen that mentioned previously but possibly
missed the discussion.
The Milan car had been written up previously.
Perhaps the car spotted on the Westgate Freeway might
have been Brisbane 493 which was obtained several
years ago and was moved to Newport with the other
"historic" trams. Apparently it was in poor condition
and a major restoration job.
VR toastrack #20 (ex-Bob Prentice) and Sydney R 1845
(ex-Alwyn Marshall) were other "foreign" trams
obtained for possible restoration.
I think there might have been a cable tram too.
Pity the insurance and administrative problems have
prevented the historic cars running in recent times.
I'm still looking forward to the opportunity to ride R
1808 on a tour. Maybe also VR bogie car #41 after it
is restored, for Haddon, at Bendigo.
Years ago, over a few beers, a few of us considered
how wonderful it would be to see a VR car and a Sydney
tram operating in Melbourne!
Somone else suggested a coupled sets of [Sydney] Os
speeding down St Kilda Road would be the go!
Paul in Melbourne.
