Yes you are correct in the fact the B class were
late due to the Hong Kong tram order,I did not go into full detail before so as
to keep the text down .There was an industrial dispute at Com Eng Dandenong
which caused the initial delay to the Hong Kong trams as well as the B class not
certian if they were being built at the same time or not. However the Hong Kong
order had a penaltys built into the contract if order was delayed or late.To
avoid the financial penalties that would be faced the B class were put on hold
to get the Hong Kong trams out on time when the dispute was over. The Hong Kong
trams were also being built in Brisbane at the same time,as the order was
split between the two factories.I am not sure what the dispute was over or how
long it lasted but it did delay the urgently required B class for the
opening of the light rail.the first two B class to operate the light rail were
2001 and 2002.
As for the year these transferres of trams took
place it was just prior to the opening of the light rail.there was an
initial transfere of A class for driver familiarization, then on the last weekend
the rest of the z 3's were transfered over the weekend.
I hope this explains things a bit better if any one
has more knowledge about these events feel free to add your comments I may not
have things 100% accurate but riding on an A class to St Kilda in peak hour I
do Know that the comutters were not happy loosing their train to squeeze
into an A class.at the time the light rail opened.Trucker
Graeme.
