Privatisation to secure Adelaide tram upgrade: Expressions of interest have
been invited for the franchise to operate and upgrade Adelaide's Glenelg
tramway. The 11-km, mostly segregated, tramway links Adelaide's Victoria Sq
with the seaside town of Glenelg and is operated by some 20 1929-built H
class trams, carrying about 2 million passengers/year. The Government is in
the processing of rehabilitating five H trams to form a heritage fleet, and
now wants the private sector to take on the modernisation of the line's
infrastructure and the supply of eight or nine new air-conditioned low-floor
articulated trams to provide the basic service under the franchise. The
Government believes that a private sector partner would be in a strong
position to develop a case for extension of the line from Victoria Sq
through the city centre. Expressions of interest have to be lodged by
mid-February.

I like the bit about extending the line to the City Centre.
About time. Again.
