----- Original Message -----Hi there From Greg O'Flynn in Warrnambool ( Home of WCR'S carriage maintainence depot) >From North Geelong the standard gauge to the west does follow along the Hamilton highway as it crosses over it near Inverleigh but is across the paddocks by 100 yards or slightly more in spots to Wingeel the first crossing loop after Gheringhap( currently the end of the dual gauge from Nth Glong C box .and the point of divergence of the line to Mildura via Ballarrat). this corridor is to be converted to narrow gauge ( ie standard guage) commencing in June this year and expected to take three months, and along the way creating two or three dual gauge interfaces for want of a better description, Nth G/long Ballarrat and possibly Maryborough; Meanwhile from Wingeel to just out of Cressy the line paralells the highway, but most of the traffic is west bound late evening an o/nite and of course East bound is early am. From Cressy ( formerly a two way Jct the line from Ballarrat to Irrewarra; The Jct on the line to Warrnambool) joined and left at Cressy all connection removed in the 50's continues westward to the next loop at Berrybank, skirting the townships of Lismore an Derrinallum, then turning northwest when it becomes very difficult to follow the line closely, on to ViteVite Xing loop, Tatyoon Xing loop to Junction with the main line to Portland at Maroona, 15 miles south of Ararat, C T C currently commences at Pyrenees Loop 2 miles west of Ararat but within the next 3/4 weeks will be extended to Maroona, signalling the removal of the last Somersault signals on the main line to the West. The CTC is controlled from Adelaide in Stg Australia. TCO'sther control from Albury South box on the NSW border to Adelaide on Aust rail track Authority lines including some signal release functions in Melbourne. You can follow the line west from Ararat quite easily to the S/A border bbut the man with the electric spray gun is always around aand his charges start at aroound $ 160 aus and 1or 2 demerit pionts , and you only get ten and the trains run at 100, to 115, k's (or better) conversley its still worth a go as thoe GM's or ge's sound great. Train lengths up to 1600 m. As David said if youre over here send us an e mail. By the way a good site for S/G B/G sightings is Graham Elliots site http;//www.railpage.org.au/ghaploop/ . Cheers Greg O' Flynn. From: greg o flynnTo: Tranzrailphotographers ModeratorSent: Thursday, February 07, 2002 12:48 AMSubject: Standard gauge in Victoria Geelong to the west
